Flat panels The three main types of flat panel Full HD 1080p HDTVs currently on the market are "conventional" LCD televisions, more energy-efficient, higher-contrast LED-LCD hybrids with edge or back LED lighting, and plasma televisions.

Flat panel TVs are usually wall-mountable (with OPTIONAL wall mount hardware and a sturdy wall) due to their thinner/flatter/lighter form factors which usually measure somewhere between 1 and 4 inches in depth when the pedestal stand is removed, which is significantly more compact than the much bulkier, heavier CRT direct view tube and rear projection televisions of the past.

Rear projection If you are shopping around for a big screen 1080p HDTV with a diagonal size measuring from 60 to 82 inches or more, are on a tight budget, and/or don't think you'll ever want to wall-mount it, you should consider a Mitsubishi 1080p projection television. Based on advanced digital micro-mirror technology developed by Texas Instruments, DLP big screen projection TVs produce a beautiful BIG SCREEN TV picture measuring up to 82 inches diagonal.

Although DLP televisions are NOT wall-mountable like flat panel TVs, they are significantly less bulky and lighter weight that the CRT rear projection TVs of the past. DLP TVs usually measure between 10 and 18 inches in depth, and weigh under 100 pounds -- the 82 incher weighs nearly 150 pounds and measures nearly 23 inches deep!

Front projector Want an even bigger high definition screen? A 1080p home theater projector can produce the biggest Full HD 1920 x 1080 high definition picture of all -- up to 10 diagonal feet or more! To get the best possible results, you'll need to install it inside a large dark dedicated room with minimal ambient lighting. Be sure to leave some room in your home theater projector budget to separately purchase a quality projection screen.

1080p HD sources To experience Full HD 1920 x 1080p, you also need one or more separate 1080p video sources such as pay 1080p movies from a DIRECTV or Dish Network satellite dish and HD receiver/DVR, Blu-ray movies from a Blu-ray Disc player, or PS3 video games. Be sure to make all connections between HDMI-enabled A/V equipment using HDMI cable.

1080p home theater Last, but certainly not least, you'll definitely want to (need to for 1080p projectors because they lack built-in speakers entirely) add a separate 1080p HD home theater surround sound audio system so you can experience the Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio digital surround sound effects that are encoded onto Blu-ray Discs.

Most of the mid-range to higher end home theater receivers on the market can perform Full HD 1080p HDMI switching among multiple 1080p HDMI source components, decode and power digital 7.1 surround sound audio effects when properly set up with a good quality home theater speaker system, up-convert the resolution of non-HD source components to 1080p, and send video output to your 1080p HDTV via a single HDMI cable.
